Exams and Marking Stages:
– Taking the National Exams: In October 2025, students across Papua New Guinea sit for their Grade 10 and 12 national exams. These exams assess if students are ready for the next step in their education journey.
– Examinations Marking, Checking and Finalising Results: After the Grade 10 and 12 exams, the education department does a thorough review and data check from late October to November. This ensures that the exam results are accurate and reliable for everyone.

Understanding Grade 11 and Tertiary Selections
Grade 11 Selection Process:
– Selection Timeline: Once Grade 10 results are out, the education department starts the Grade 11 selection process, aiming to finish by mid-December. This timing helps students transition smoothly into the new academic year.
– How Selections are Made: The education department and provincial selection representatives use exam results and school data (from secondary schools and National Schools of Excellence, formerly national high schools) to balance student performance with available spots to ensure the best outcomes for students.
Grade 12 University and College Selections:
– Role of DHERST: The Department of Higher Education uses Grade 12 results to select students for 2026 Higher Learning Institutions. They work with each institution to make sure student goals match educational opportunities. The Grade 12 School Leavers and non-school leavers selections take place after the education department releases of the exam results.
– Importance of Quotas: PNG universities and Colleges need to provide their student capacity on time to avoid selection delays, making coordination crucial for a smooth process.

Alternative Paths:
– Consider Flexible Education: Programs like Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) offer learning opportunities outside of traditional classrooms, providing flexibility for those who need it.
