PNG Universities: Application, Admission, Selection Info

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a total of eight public and private universities that offer undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields. The oldest and largest university in PNG is the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), which was established in 1965. It offers programs in agriculture, business, law, medicine, and social sciences. The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (UNITECH) is the country’s premier technological university and offers programs in engineering, science, and natural resources management.

The University of Goroka (UOG) is a specialized teacher-training university that offers undergraduate and graduate programs in education, arts, and social sciences. The University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) is a specialized university that focuses on natural resources management and environmental studies. The Western Pacific University (WPU) is the newest public university and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, business, and social sciences.

There are also three private universities in PNG. Divine Word University (DWU) is a Catholic university run by the Divine Word Missionaries that offers undergraduate and graduate programs in arts, business, education, health sciences, and natural sciences. Pacific Adventist University (PAU) is a Seventh-Day Adventist university that offers programs in arts, business, education, health sciences, and theology. International Business School (IBS) University is a private university that offers undergraduate and graduate programs in business, information technology, and hospitality management.

PNG’s Prime Minister, James Marape, challenged the Lutheran Church to build a university in Lae. Talks are underway, but this has not yet come to fruition. If established, this university would be the 9th in PNG.

The institution started as a revision centre for professional examinations in accounting and business in the late 1980s. School Leavers selection: Grade 12 selection from the National High and Secondary schools or Grade 12 matriculation studies pathway (as a school leaver)

The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST) has not yet announced the National Selection Lists PDF for the 2025 academic year intake. The successful applicants have been selected based on their Grade 12 results and the quotas for their chosen study programs.
